Schindler Elevators ETU members take their protest to the streets
21 August
Tomorrow morning, around 100 Electrical Trades Union (ETU) members employed at Schindler Elevators in the construction, new installations, repairs and service areas, will march through Brisbane city as part of their campaign for improved wages and working conditions.
The ETU has been in negotiations with Schindler for nearly two months, and frustrations are rising.
According to State ETU organiser Steve Bravo, the members' requests are straightforward – “they want industry-standard wages and fair conditions that align with other industry players, while we also want improved job security and sub-contractor clauses.”
“These skilled and essential workers are crucial to the construction and service sector but at the moment they feel let down by their employer. They want to send a strong and meaningful message to Schindler negotiators, come back to the bargaining table with an offer that is fair and reasonable.” Bravo said.
While striving to minimise public disruption, Mr. Bravo acknowledged the possibility of some worksite disruptions and congestion during the action. But he also pointed out that members have committed to remaining available to undertake emergency work where passengers may become trapped in lifts.
The march will commence at 9am from 360 Queen St concluding at North Quay near Herschell St.
