Unions warn Brisbane airport commuters “Expect Delays” on Monday

More than 30 essential electrical and service workers down tools for 24 hours

On Monday morning more than 30 skilled and essential workers who ensure the electrical maintenance and smooth running of luggage conveyor systems and airbridges across Brisbane’s domestic and international airports will walk off the job for 24 hours.

The action by Electrical Trades Union ETU and Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union members employed by Alstef Group will impact the movement of luggage and commuters are urged to plan and expect delays.

ETU Deputy Secretary Scott Reichman said the strike was triggered by the Alstef’s obvious disrespect for the work the highly skilled and vital part of the workforce perform.

“This small but important workforce including electricians and mechanical fitters are a vital cog which enables the smooth running of airline services, and they don’t take this action lightly. They have been extremely disappointed with Alstef’s lack of respect for the work they perform, during this current bargaining round, the wages and conditions on offer are subpar and well below what members are seeking.”

Mr Reichman said the workers will rally outside the International terminal from 6am and he also warned that unless there was some significant movement from the company, the action will be the start of rolling stoppages and disruption.

“While Alstef continues to take a pig-headed approach to bargaining and while our members continue to see their real wages falling further and further behind, they believe they have no other option but to legally withdraw their labour, for as long as it takes.”
